Spread over a sprawling area of 600 sq kms Sunabeda Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in Nuapada district of Orissa and sharing common border with Chhatisgarh. The adjoining forest blocks of Patadhara, Gatibeda, Munikgarh, Ranimai, Patidonger and Lodra together constitute this green landscape. Sunabeda Wildlife Sanctuary is a grass covered plateau adjoining Udanti and Sitanadi Sanctuaries of Chhatisgarh State. The sanctuary has been designated as the third Tiger Reserve, sharing the tiger habitat with contiguous Udanti Sanctuary in Chhattisgarh.
Sunabeda is an excellent natural habitat of endangered flora and fauna. The sanctuary is an ideal habitat for the Barasingha. The sanctuary houses a variety of wildlife such as Sambar, Chousingha, Nilgai, Barking Deer, Gaur, Pangolin, Sloth bear, Leopard, etc. Wild buffalows and Barasingha are known to migrate between Udanti and Sunabeda. The water bodies, including Patora reservoir of Sunabeda, attract varieties of long-distance migratory water birds during the winter months.
The major attractions for the tourists visiting this Sunabeda wildlife sanctuary are Eleven magnificent waterfalls, mystic caves at Ranimuhas, splendid archaeological sites at Giribaman, the firm fort of Jumlagarh and the bird observation points at Jalki and Raital Bandh in Maraguda. It’s also is a part of the tourist route linking Nrushinghanath, Harishakar, Patal Ganga, Patora Reservoir and Jogeswar Temple.
