Puttaparthi the home of spiritual guru, Sathya Sai Baba is located on the banks of Chitravathi River. Formerly Puttaparthi was a small farming village known as Gollapalli, which means the home of cowherds. Puttaparthi has its historical importance revolving around the birth as well as life of Sri Sathya Sai Baba. The history of the destination is believed to commence on November 23, 1926, when Satyanarayana Raju (the original name of Sai Baba) was born. Until this time, it was a village set in a narrow farming valley.
The main attraction of the town is Prasanthi Nilayam, means 'the abode of peace" was constructed in 1950. The 'Prashanti Nilayam' an ashram attracts large number of devotees throughout the year. The beautiful architecture of the structure and the tranquility can leave visitors spellbound. The ashram is a huge complex with room for thousands, with canteens, shops, a museum and library, and a vast assembly hall. Ever year 23rd of November is celebrated with great joy and enthusiasm by the devotees of Baba at the Prasanthi Nilayam.
Apart from the residence and ashram of Sathya Sai Baba, who is considered to be a reincarnation of Shirdi Sai Baba, the town has a Hanuman temple, mosque and Sathyabhama temple, which was constructed by the grandfather of Sathya Sai Baba.

Sri Satya Sai Prasanthi Nilayam railway station is just 8 km from the ashram and it connects with the major cities in India. You can easy get cabs and autos from outside the Railway Station.
The town today has a domestic airport called the Sri Satya Sai Airport, placed at a 4 km away from the Ashram. The airport is well-connected to major cities such as Chennai and Mumbai.
