The shrine of Lord Mallikarjuna is situated on a flat top of Nallamalai Hills in Srisailam. The temple is one of the 12 Jyotirlinga of lord Shiva. Srisailam is the religious destinations of Saivite pilgrimage for centuries. It is said that by merely seeing the tip of mountain one is emancipated from all his sins and worries. The person becomes free from the vicious cycle of life and death.
The temple is considered very holy and is dedicated to Mallikarjuna Swamy and Bhramaramba. It is unique in feature where all the devotees who visit the temple are allowed to touch the idol which is not prevalent in any other temple. Temple of Tripurantakam, Siddavatam, Alampura and Umamaheswaram located in the vicinity of Mallikarjuna Jyotirlina are considered to be the four gateways to Sri Sailam.
Mallika means Parvati, while Arjuna is another name of Shiva. In this way both Shiva and Parvati came to reside in this linga. Bhramarambha Temple is also located in the same complex and considered as one of the eighteen Shakti peethas in India. Devi Bhramramba of Srisailam is a very ferocious deity and first Sakthi of the eighteen Sakthis.
