Kuldiha Wildlife Sanctuary

Spreads across an area of 272.75 sq. km. The Kuldiha Wildlife Sanctuary is blessed with a charming forest and a variety of wildlife. The sanctuary is close to Nilgiri forest towards north and Mayurbhanj forest in northwest. Sukhuapata and Gagua hills separate Kuldiha from Similipal. The Rissia reservoir in northwest is over river Tangana and Sindhua reservoir in southeast is over Uastal nala are two reservoirs in Kuldiha. These to reservoirs have helped the crop and climate regime of the region.

The sanctuary presents typical mixture of Peninsular (coastal) Sal forests and moist mixed deciduous forests of Deccan peninsula. Mangrove plant species such as Bani, Rai, etc. are seen at the coast specifically at the confluence of the river Budhabalanga. The moist climate of Kuldiha favours growth of a variety of Orchids.

Kuldiha Wildlife Sanctuary is home to rare species of animals and plants. The thick wooded forests of the region are home to wild animals like the tiger, elephant, leopards, sambar, bison, gaur and giant squirrels. Elephants that characterize the landscape are commonly seen in Kuldiha. The reservoirs attract the elephants round the year. The forest also houses a variety of birds like hornbills, hill myna and peafowl. The perennial streams that water the forests are home to a variety of reptiles.

The whole topography of the place provides ample scope for trekking and hiking. The snctuary fits into a tourism circuit encompassing Chandipur, Remuna, Nilagiri and Panchalingeswar. The famous temple of Lord Jagannath at Nilagiri is visited by the visitors from far and wide.

WHEN TO VISIT : The most preferable time to visit Kuldiha Wildlife Sanctuary is from the months of October to March. During that time the temperate climate would allow you to spend quite some time viewing the graces of Mother Nature.

CLOTHING : Cotton or linen full-sleeve outfits which match with surroundings like dark green, muddy-brown and rocky-grey are the ideal clothing color.
