Bhimbandh Wildlife Sanctuary

Spread over an area of 681.99 km² Bhimbandh Wildlife Sanctuary is a reserved forest. Encompassing dense forests and hot water springs Bhimbandh is situated south of the Ganges River at the northern edge of Chota Nagpur Plateau and west of Santhal Pargana. According to Mahabharat, Bhima one of the pandavas constructed a dam (bandh) here and therefore it is called Bhimbandh.

Bhimbandh Wildlife Sanctuary also consists of many animals like tigers, leopards, wild bears and the Golden Jackal lurking in the bushes. Barking deer, cheetal, peacocks, sloth bear, Chinese pangolin, badgers and flying squirrels are also commonly sighted here. This wildlife sanctuary is more famous for its birdlife because it is a home to more than hundred of different bird species. These resident birds stay in this forest cover area all the year around.

The vegetation of the Kharagpur Hill is extremely rich. This forest area mainly consists of bamboo forest, sal forest, grass lands and many other small forests. Many other trees also grow on the hilly terrain on this sanctuary and protect the forms as well as creepers from the scortching sun rays. In the valley portions and at the foothills are several hot springs of which the finest are at Bhimbandh, Sita Kund and Rishi Kund. All the hot springs maintain nearly almost same temperature all year round.

WHEN TO VISIT : The most preferable time to visit Bhimbandh Wildlife Sanctuary is from the months of October to April. During that time the temperate climate would allow you to spend quite some time viewing the graces of Mother Nature.

CLOTHING : Cotton or linen full-sleeve outfits which match with surroundings like dark green, muddy-brown and rocky-grey are the ideal clothing color. Avoid shiny or reflective clothes during safari which may diverts or attracts wild animals & birds’ attention which may become cause them leaving the place.
