KANPUR- Leather City of The World


Kanpur is one of the oldest industrial cities in Northern India is Nestled on the banks of the eternal River Ganga. The city has its own historical, religious and commercial significance. According to the Mahabharata, Kanpur was a territory gifted to Karna by Suyodhana. The city was initially known by the name Karnapur 'the land of Karna'. Over the ages 'Karnapur" was shortened to become Kanpur.

Kanpur has been instrumental in making an unforgettable contribution to the Indian freedom struggle. The First War of Indian Independence that took place in the year 1857 was led by Nana Sahib of Bithur at Kanpur. This event that stirred the heart of India became an inspiration for the freedom fighters. Besides that, this city houses many parks, gardens, water bodies and religious places of visit.

Famous for its textile, leather and engineering industries, the city is also home to one of the most prestigious educational institutes of India, IIT Kanpur. The age old monuments and varied other constructions, which reflect the history of the place attracts tourists. Shri Radhakrishna Temple, Jain Glass Temple, Allen Forset Zoo, Moti Jheel Park, Nana Rao Park and Gurudwara Banno Sahib are some of the popular tourist destinations of Kanpur.
